I've never understood why a city that likes to thing of itself as bike friendly
doesn't sweep the bike lanes before the rest of its streets each spring. Sand can
take down a bike and accumulated winter debris can its tires, while having virtually
no impact on cars. I know that a main purpose of sweeping is to keep sand out of
storm sewer runoff to lakes, creeks and the river. If biking is a green activity, it
would seem that sweeping bikes lanes first fits within the overall purpose of sweeping
streets. Last year, there was still enough sand in the University Avenue bike lane in
mid-May to force a rider using a 25 cm tire virtually into the traffic lane.
