I am writing to alert all you dog lovers that the Minnehaha Park Off Leash Area is a hazard to your dog! Today I was visiting the park with my 8 month old Boxer Raj. Just inside the main entrance to Minnehaha Off Leash Park there is a cliff that runs just left and adjacent to the main entrance/exit path. I have walked this path dozens of times with my licensed dog. Today my dog fell off the 40 foot cliff to his eventual death. He died just as we arrived at the animal hospital. In preparing him for his last trip home, I was told by staff at the animal hospital that this has happened to 3 other dogs at the very same park. While I am still in shock and numb from losing our family pet, I am angry that there exists WITHIN the boundaries of our parks such a clear and present danger. What next, children, adults falling to their deaths?!!!
It is clear that when this original park area was developed by the WPA that fencing was installed along the cliff edge all along Minnehaha Park. Our forefathers clearly were interested in protecting the public, why not now? This is evidenced by remnants of the original fence that you can see when walking the dozens of paths along the Mississippi River and Minnehaha Creek. You ask yourself, why in the heck wouldn't the Park Board install protective fencing to protect not only our 4 legged, but 2 legged loved ones? Now, one would expect dangers along city streets, but NOT in a City sanctioned off-leash area! I telephoned Jon Olson my Park Board Commissioner from the 4th District and he clearly agrees that something should be done to eliminate such a danger. I shudder at the thought of other pet owners having to endure what I have been through today. I hope none of you have to endure what I've been through today.
