Corrie Zoll seems to think that gas mowers are the only alternative to reel mowers. Try an electric mower, with or without a cord. The only pollution I experience is dust being blown back if I go over a bare spot.
Or buy a goat. ;-) I bought a reel mower when we bought a house 22 years ago. Couldn't get close to the fence on the slope of the yard, and a real pain on the front slope (both slopes about 1 foot rise in 2-3 feet of width), since the mower doesn't cut if the wheels are slipping. Gave it to my neighbor a couple of years later. Seems to me any good mower shop should be able to sharpen a reel mower's blades.
