Matthea Little Smith made this point:
I surely question why Brian Herron got all of the press for
admitting to his crime and Joe Biernat is getting much less
press for "fighting" for his political career and in my
opinion making a "mockery" of our city political system
that is already fragile.

SB: First, I would point out that the Herron charge and plea occurred last July, and
information suggested that the government was investigating Biernat didn't surface
until March 14. So it's natural if there would be more Herron stories, since five
times as much time has elapsed since the charge against him, compared to the
disclosure that investigators were seeking records on Biernat.

Second, I would question whether there has been more publicity about Herron than
Biernat, if one looks only at the first two months of coverage of each, the period
since the Biernat search warrant emerged. The Star Tribune has had four front pages
stories involving Biernat and the federal investigation (3-14/3-15/4-19/5-13), four
Metro cover stories (3-24/4-20/5-08/5-22), one Doug Grow column (4-21) and one
business cover story (3-19). That's pretty substantial coverage. It also equals the
number of section cover stories (nine) in the first two months of the Herron
disclosure.
