One of the features the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District required for the new
Highway 55 bridge over Minnehaha Creek was a critter crossing. My idea was to
prevent road kill and enhance the Creek's use as a wildlife corridor. From my perch
overlooking the Lagoon at Minnehaha Parkway, just upstream of highway 55, I declare
it a success so far. I have had mink, opossum, and wild turkey in my yard and seen
beaver swimming in the Lagoon.

The MCWD has since incorporated into our rules a requirement for critter crossings on
all new or replacement bridges. Over the course of time, we should be able to
gradually make changes to improve the creek corridor for animals. I hate seeing
squished carcasses on the roads.
