This to me is more of a problem than the buses using Nicollet. Who wants to eat where every other other bite is accompanied by diesel exhaust? The buses are also extremely and unncessarily noisy. This problem is true of buses up and down Hennepin and our other thoroughfares that have significant pedestrian traffic. While I realize that the effeciency of electric motors and loss of energy in the storage and transfer of electricity is such that you are not just displacing pollution but in most situations increasing it, I like the idea of zero emmissions buses traveling Nicollet, Hennepin, Central, University Ave., and other central city thoroughfares in neighborhoods where the air is already thick with the exhaust of private autos. I'd be in favor of requiring taxis to be Zero emmisions to be liscensed in the city, or at least encouraging new and replacement taxis to be zero emmissions. After walking around downtown and inhaling a ton of bus exhaust, you turn onto a side street off Nicollet and are hit with the exhaust from lines of idling cabs at the taxi stands. This makes the air quality on the street level downtown nearly unbearable at rush hour when the most buses run and the most cars are out on downtown streets. Displacement of pollution could be partially resolved if a larger part of the electric energy was provided by wind and solar sources. Perhaps we could setup a system of funding a windmill to accompany putting each new zev into service.
