Richard Carney sent us the story of the proposal to move the Capitol
http://www.theonion.com/onion3820/congress_threatens.html with a list of cities under consideration. Since the good folks over at City Hall and at MCDA feel a need to make a proposal for everything looking for an event venue or new home I'm concerned about what must be under discussion over at MCDA right now. Its gotta be happening because the Chair of MCDA isn't answering her phone. There's a long history of this. It wasn't that long ago that there was an attempt to bring the Olympics here (and that was before we knew that bribery was a requirement for getting the Olympics) Anyway, we have this Rapid Park property that our friends over at City Hall thought they found an occupant for but the MN Legislature took away that opportunity. City Hall is still looking for an occupant for the Rapid Park property when, puff, The Onion publishes the story that the current Capitol is considered obsolete by its occupants and, guess what, they want to move. Back at MCDA, they see new Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts that will bring more jobs and affordable housing to Minneapolis. They'll ignore that any housing near the current value that is anything close to affordable isn't anything that comes close to meeting our local zoning code. These folks are bureaucrats and bureaucracy is what they are good at. They are writing proposals to move this thing right hear to the banks of the Mississippi River (well within a mile is close enough for government work and we just gave the river bank to The Guthrie, now all the Guthrie needs is money). We need to stop this plan before it develops the momentum of a train steaming down the Northstar Corridor! We need to stop this plan before the City Council creates another TIF district! We need to stop this plan before a Councilmember is shown on News at 9 exchanging money resulting in an indictment that further backs up our court system! Stop the Capitol move now! Not in my backyard!
