Though this is not news to the list, the formal announcement is posted for the record: ______________________ Palmer Announces Candidacy for Minneapolis School Board
Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 25, 2002 Citing the need for renewed commitment to increasing student achievement and retention, to supporting alternative education and to meeting the challenges of student diversity, Jonathan Palmer formally announced his candidacy for the Minneapolis Board of Education. Co-chairing the Palmer campaign are the Rev. Al Gallman, County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin, Julie Matson Ostrow and Marnie Wells. Palmer has been endorsed by the AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Our children face many challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. We must make certain were taking a holistic approach to their problems and that cuts in budget dont also mean cuts in basic opportunities for any child, especially those with the greatest needs. The decisions facing us now are certainly stamped Handle With Care, Palmer said. Palmer is the Deputy Director for Hands On Cedar Hill Academy, a contract alternative school with the Minneapolis Public School System and serves on the board of Loring Nicollet Bethlehem Community Centers. Both organizations serve at-risk students and those whose needs extend beyond the traditional classroom setting. Palmer also served three terms as Board Chair of the Stevens Square Community Organization and currently sits on the Minneapolis Empowerment Zone Board and the City Capital Long-range Improvement Committee. He holds a BA in Psychology from Morehouse College and is a candidate for an MA in Public Affairs from the University of Minnesotas Humphrey Institute. Palmer is a member of the Democratic Farmer Labor party and will be seeking endorsement at their convention on June 1st.
