I actually think that Jim and I are on the same page as far as the safety of every neighborhood, particularly Phillips and especially Indian children (already victims of crime and police brutlaity), being important. The problem is that I (and most people in Phillips, I live just on the other side of the 28th st. bridge)don't trust this police force with this police chief to do that.
It's tragic and appaling to see good, well meaning people terrorized by gangs and drug lords. Although I think our war on drugs is responsible for creating many of these problems, no reasonable person would dispute the right of people everywhere to their saftey. The thing is this police force is not interested in guarenteeing that. The widely held (and unconfirmed) belief is that one aspect of CODEFOR involves containing crime in certain neighborhoods. During my attempt at being a candidate last year, the majority of Phillips residents I spoke to held the belief that the police only come in to phillips to harass and intimidate people and not to solve the problem of crime in an inner city neighborhood. I myself have yet to be treated respectfully by a Minneapolis Police officer. Of course the police must be part of this solution, but I don't believe that will happen until there is substantial change in police culture. This may be a situation where neighbors have to organize on thier own. > Jim Graham wrote: > > ... Family with children terrorized by neighbors. > > Tamir Nolley wrote: > > ...
