I, too, have noticed a trend in southwest Minneapolis that I find disturbing.
Lots of people, usually on the ends of the blocks because of the access)
are adding a second garage to this (usually) tuck-under garages. It entails
removing part of the back yard and sometimes a deck is added on top. In one
egregious instance a double garage was added on the front of the house on the
4900 block of Dupont Avenue South making it look like a suburban home with a
a big gaping garage door.

Not only is removing green space from the city, I think it says a lot about
lack of a decent transportation system. Why do people in the City need two
cars? For 25 years my husband and I plus two kids, managed with one car
quite nicely. However, I will add that now that it is just my husband and I
we do have two cars (one sits outside the garage). The bus system simply
doesn't run to the places we want to go unless you are willing to spend an
overnight somewhere.

We need a transit strategy for Minneapolis that takes into account how people
want to move around. I will also add that we need a transportation system
for the country as well, but that is a posting I can't make here.
