In response to Eva Young's lament that Coleman and
Pawlenty did not appear at Pride, I ask "How could
they?" Coleman refused for several years to recognize
Pride by sigining a proclamation. Pawlenty voted for
the Human Rights Bill several years ago with provided
civil right protection to GLBT people and now says he
regrets his vote. How do you regret a vote in favor
of human rights. Also, he was a leader in the efforts
to prevent GLBT state employees from having domestic
partnership. For either of these two individuals to
show up at Pride and face valid criticism for thier
"hostile" positions towards GLBT individuals would
have taken a lot more courage than most politicians
have. I am all for inclusiveness, but I think i would
have personally been offended if either of them
participated in the parade or the festival, unless
they changed thier opinions on policies that impact
GLBT people. Call me closeminded, but I don't think
Tim Pawlenty for example, would have been able to
convince me that I should support him because he would
be the best candidate to advocate for my civil rights
and equal treatment in important aspects of society.
