Get out and watch Minnesota Amateur Baseball games. Admission, if there is any, is $2 or $3; hot dogs are fresh and just a couple of bucks; and the game is played the way the baseball gods intended: on grass, under the sun, in the fresh air, competitively but for fun. Within the freeway ring, including both Minneapolis and St. Paul, you can find a bunch of Class A teams. Their state tournament is in either Minneapolis or St. Paul. In the rest of the state, you can find Minnesota Town Ball played by the Class B and C teams in cities and towns all over. I'm partial to the Cannon Valley Classic League, especially the Miesville Mudhens (currently in a rebuilding year) and the Red Wing Aces (possibly going to contend for the Class B championship). The B and C tournaments this year will be in St. Cloud and Cold Spring, where there are great ball fields. Follow the tournaments every year and learn about interesting non-metro parts of the state. See http://www.minnesotabaseball.org/ . (If you click on the State Tournament button, scroll down, and click on the "K&K" links under Photo Gallery, you can see some of the photos I took at last year's B & C tournaments at Miesville and Red Wing.) To wax a bit nostalgic, when I was growing up in North Minneapolis, I remember fast pitch softball in the parks all over the city. I don't remember any women playing, probably because it was long before Title IX's influence. But it seems to have pretty much disappeared. I played slow pitch for 20+ years, but that seems to be vanishing, too. -- Ken Bearman, King Field _______________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A Civil City Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest option, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
