I have perspective from a living in a couple of different parts of the city on this issue.
I grew up on Lake Nokomis. Yes, the airplane noise was significant. Not as bad for me as for the people directly in the flight pattern. You kind of get used to pausing when you are on phone calls and the like. However, it can't be dismissed that their is some residual damage to your home from the vibrations. Our windows used to rattle so I have to believe that the walls and floors rattled too to some degree. That probably caused some cracks. Not sure. I lived on the corner just up the hill from the little beach at Lake Nokomis. At that time, it was a huge attraction for "cruisers" with fancy souped up cars and gigantic loud stereo systems. We knew every spring we were going to be "under siege" from people using the lake. People would throw the Baskin Robbins litter in my mothers garden and such. They would park in our drive way, pee on our garage, sit on our hill and have sex in their cars in front of our house. People would cruise the street with 6 foot speakers in their trunks. Everyone had a different station or tape in. The net affect to our ears was horrid. My mother turned terrorist at times. She sprayed people who would litter our lawn with the hose. She put unprocessed sheep manure and red pepper flakes on the park hill in front of our house so the "hippies wouldn't smoke pot there". That's probably why the naturescape on that hill is growing so well today. It's been well fertilized. In Whittier, I have put up with a different kind of environmental pollution. Gas fumes from 35W. On a humid summer morning you can really smell it. Litter everywhere from every kind of store you can imagine. Loud stereos in the middle of the night rattling your windows. Lead windows in the old houses and children playing on lead laden grassless lawns. Gunfire, shouting, cussing, drug dealing, grafitti and a host of other things. This past weekend someone lit the American Flag I had hanging off my house on fire while it was on my house. I support the right to burn the flag. AS LONG AS IT BELONGS TO YOU AND NOT ME. All in all I think we all put up with a lot of things to live in the city. Yet, we all do it. I love Minneapolis with all it's problems. Have you ever been near a farm when they render pigs and it's 98 degrees outside? I'll pick up litter and suck in 35W fumes anyday to that.
