I just read an article in the Skyway News about the new housing that is being built in Elliot Park. The housing, Grant Park, includes condos and other housing units which start at $140,000. There is a signifcant amount of public subsidy in this project and some of the supporters say its going to help provide home-buying opportunities for renters in the neighborhood who wish to stay in the area. There is no affordable housing set-aside for this project.
My question is as follows: After all the units are sold, is there any way to track how many people are actually former renters from the neighborhood vs the number who are from other parts of the city and surrounding areas. My personal thought is that $140,000 is affordable to some people, but not most of the people in the neighborhood. If part of the defense of the lack of affordable housing in Grant Park is that people from the neighborhood want to live there and buy units, it would be good if there is some sort of proof that this actually occurrs.
