I wanted to thank everyone on this List who gave me great information regarding the Elm tree the city marked for removal for Dutch Elm Disease. Because of the information and timeliness of the information from you folks, I have been able to get a preventative treatment for the other two Elms in my yard, which surely would have become infected if I did/do nothing (from what I have learned). Faced with having one beautiful 84 inch diameter tree is bad enough, but all three of same size was a heartbreaking and bank-breaking situation! Only one tree was marked, but unknown to me, the other two would surely follow. It is costing me way more to remove the one tree than it is to give preventative treatment to the other two that will last three years. Not an option for everyone, but a good one to me.
I knew nothing about Dutch Elm Disease before this happened. (except vaguely hearing something about it in high school) The city did not inform me of any preventative measures. I feel lucky that I was contacted by helpful folks on the List. The city doesn't even contract for removal of the stump if you would like to replant you negotiate that separately with whoever gets the bid to remove your tree. Not until today was I able to talk to Forestry and had confirmation that prevention was in this case a good idea. Left to my own embarrasing ignorance, I would have eventually had three large stumps in my yard and nothing else!!
