I thought the first one was particularly interesting, but someone might
want to pick up on the next one.

3COM'S URBAN CHALLENGE PROGRAM TO HELP BRIDGE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE

Deadline: November 1, 2002

A program of Santa Clara, California-based technology company 3Com,
the
Urban
Challenge program provides grants of $100,000 in 3Com technology to
U.S.
cities that use information technology in new and innovative ways.

Modeled on 3Com's 1996 collaboration with the City of Boston, which
helped
transform its 130 public schools into the nation's first fully
networked
urban school system, the program has awarded $4 million in grants to
40
cities since 1999, and will give additional grants to more cities by
the end
of 2002. The new winners will not only receive 3Com equipment, but will
also
be eligible for reduced-cost share assistance from program partner
AmeriCorps*VISTA. Urban Challenge winners who qualify will obtain
low-cost
assistance for installation management, training, and more.

Using the 3Com grant, schools, departments, and organizations can
tailor a
networking solution that meets their community's needs. To participate,
a
city should meet at least one of the following criteria: have a
principal
policy agenda aimed at enhancing educational or community development;
be
able to demonstrate involvement and a strong endorsement from the
mayor's
office; provide tangible benefits to students and residents in a
specified
timeframe; serve multiple constituencies, including schools, local
community
colleges, libraries, government agencies, healthcare institutions,
etc.;
and/or be able to articulate specific ideas about how it intends to use
the
grant. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis.

For further information and to request a grant application, see the
3Com Web
site.
