Jimmy "Jam" Harris lived on 42nd & Portland. His mother has passed, but I believe his father still lives there. His father (I think they call him Jelly) is a musician in his own right. Jimmy got his talent from the gene pool. His dad plays piano, I know, and played in venues around town, and also had been teaching piano to young people.
I am not sure where Terry Lewis lived. Denise (Mazone) do you know? My sister Iris was his counselor when he attended the U of M and was debating whether to go into music fulltime. She told him to follow his gut. Apparently he did. Jimmy has always been a really nice guy, and he is a great human being as well as an astounding musical artist. I think he would feel even more honored with a street named after him than he does about the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And knowing him, he would feel that it would have made his mother proud. In a recent post about potential street names, Pam Taylor noted several folks, including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Flyte Time), along with Prince, "who are from Minneapolis, and have put us on the map with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, etc. It occurred to me, with all these indisputably famous folks from Minneapolis, why stop at just street names? Seriously! Why aren't the places where they lived recognized and marked as such? I've heard that MCDA or Inspections demolished Prince's childhood home in Central neighborhood, but what about the rest - is there anything left of that history? We need to save it and celebrate it while we still can!! Does anyone on the list have info about some of these places?
