"The question you seem to anwser is that the
schools are now designed for social
engineering. My feeling is that schools are only
for education which in the end
is up to the parents to control not the
government. The private schools do offer a better
education which is what parents care about. The
troubles are that most of us can not afford
private schools for if we could I believe most
parents of every race and class would send them
there,(except perhaps those who believe in
social engineering for their children.)"

I think there's some fallacious think that goes
on when thinking about private schools. Everyone
looks at what they think is the general level of
quality in private schools (have yet to see any
research quoted about all private schools). They
judge that students do better. Then they take
that great logical leap into the abyss: "If all
students were in private schools, the overall
level of achievement would rise".

Never does it seem to occur to them that present
student achievement in private schools is tied to
present CONDITIONS in private schools. That
could include a lot of different things such as
the volume of psychological trauma those schools
must overcome in its student population. The lack
of socialization in the problem students that
would transfer. The many unmet family needs of
the at-risk population of students. The fact
that most of the teachers would need to transfer
with the students to keep classes at present
size. That means, of course, that whatever
incompetence now exists in public school staff
would follow the students to the private schools.

It is odd and ironic that the lack of thinking
skills many of our student graduates seem to have
is also present in the population of adults who
want a quickie solution to our "failing schools".
