For the record, my headline on the column is "Library bigwigs say 'no
exteriors for you!'"

I meant that to be much more all-encompassing than the mayor, definitely
including library staff, who were responsible for refusing our request and
in one case, giving us the run-around.

I did call two members of the Implementation Committee - Lisa Goodman and RT
Rybak - there's a chance the committee as a whole doesn't have a clue what
is going on.

I do think the mayor's comments indicate that he supports not releasing the
images. I think he's dead wrong and, at least in this instance, forgetting
the important "openness" theme of his campaign.

That said, he did talk to me, rather than "covering up," and I appreciate
that....not every source who disagrees with an opinion-writer will return
calls.

I think there is clearly a cover-up here, though I don't know if Rybak is a
part of it. I do know he saw nothing ultimately wrong with showing images to
a public meeting but refusing to show them to the public at large. I think
that's very dangerous, even if this case is a minor one.

Can you imagine if a top city official presented a working document to a
council committee, but when reporters asked to see it they were told no,
it's "like trying to tell the story of a movie by taking one frame"? (This
the mayor's rationale for why the public doesn't need to see Pelli's
preliminary exterior drawing...).

I welcome other comments on the piece, both to me (letters to the ed, too)
and especially to this forum.
