Ken Avidor's bulletin on STRIDE was pretty
interesting. But it raised a question that I
thought I'd post to see if anyone has substantial
information to offer.

With all the controversy about LRT, has anyone
produced a credible estimate of what a useful
busway costs? I ask this because every year at
fair time, I ride the fair bus from U of M to the
fairgrounds. The parking is free, the bus ride
is free, and the trip is the fastest thing, car
or bus, I take all year.

That being said, what would be the effect on bus
ridership if a limited number of these things
were built so that express buses could use them
and move a ton of people places, cutting car
volume and pollution.

I'm assuming it is a bit cheaper and less
disruptive than any kind of rail system (yeh, I
like trains a lot more, but any system that cuts
fuel use FASTER through being cheaper has a lot
of practical attraction to me).

I have some reservation about these "busways" in
the middle of existing freeways. Sure they are
probably cheaper on day one. But it seems to me
that they aggravate the freeway traffic without
necessarily being faster. Certainly not as fast
as the U of M busway.

Any facts or thoughts?

Karen Collier(Linden Hills):
"It would appear that the overall sense of this
Council is less than collaborative."

Well, at least one hopes they are NOT taking
bribes (yet). Maybe some of the new CM's saw
where "collaboration" got us before. Maybe the
subcommittees should work better at keeping the
Council up to speed so the subcommittees don't
think their work is "done" when maybe its just beginning.
