What if there were methods that these teachers and the schools could use that would alleviate the lack of parent involvement? Would it still be the "parents"?
> Teachers should own up to fact that they are members of a union that > supports apathetic self-involved governance whose priorities are not the education > of the youth, but the perpetuation of bureaucracy, careerism, and petty politics > in order to promote its own interests. Ha! Believe me, you don't have to sell ME on failings of the ambulatory corpse that is the Teacher's Union. However as far as I know teachers can't work unless they join the union. In my opinion the teachers should dump the current union en masse and form a whole new one from scratch. > Is it still the "parents"? > Why is it unreasonable to assume that I should be able to enroll my child in school > and expect them to be educated? Because you're the parent. Because it IS unreasonable on its face. Because for whatever reason this city and state's legislatures pay teachers shamefully little money and expect the world of them. Because as a citizen you are responsible for the policies of governance, and if the system isn't working you must do something about it. Because if you want a better life for your kids you're going to have to be an active participant in their upbringing -- which is NOT an unreasonable thing to ask of a "parent." > From my perspective, this "it's the parents" rationalization is how middle-class > parents in Minneapolis justify the inequality of outcomes in the public schools. > "Things are fine the way they are now because nothing can be done to over > come the lack of involvement in THOSE families." >From my perspective too many self-involved adults aren't willing to sacrifice or exert themselves to raise their own children, and prefer to point the finger of blame at "the system." "Curse that dratted system, it's turning 80% of our kids into janitors!" But it's always somebody else's fault, isn't it... _______________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A Civil City Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest option, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
