Yay!
While I'd rather see us paying $2 a gallon because we finally got a clue and raised the gas tax, anything that makes folks think twice about taking the car out is worth it. One thing I really respect our Mayor for was choosing a Toyota Prius as his "official" car. They get 50+ miles per gallon on average and actually get a higher mpg in the city than on freeways thanks to the way the engine was designed. All for the price of about $23,000, meaning you could get two for the same price as a lot of those oversized gas guzzlers you see way too many of in an urban setting. I read an interesting piece in the Strib auto section yesterday where they talked about multivalve designs and how those innovations affect fuel efficiency and power. Turns out that multivalve designs would allow us to get more power from the same engine or use a smaller engine to get the same power we get now. Automakers have chosen to stick with the same big blocks and rev up our engines rather than move towards higher fuel efficiency. That needs to change.
