Title: Garages are for more than just cars...
I think it’s a good idea for Minneapolis homes to have garages.

  1. Garages are a great place to store bikes, burleys, trailabikes, wagons, and scooters. Helps prevent theft.
  2. Garages are a great place to store “yard junk” and yard/garden equipment — which can be a real eyesore if sitting out in a yard or by an alley.
  3. If an owner or subsequent owner does own a car, it gets the car off the street which makes our streets look and feel much nicer. Also helps prevent theft. Also aids snowplowing.

I don’t think mandatory garages imply that property owners are morons. Property owners need to consider themselves only the temporary stewards of their lots and buildings. The person who builds first on a piece of land owes it to the future to think long-term, about many aspects of the design, function, and sustainability of what they are creating.

Let’s not emulate all those suburban homes where the attached garage dominates the structure; there are many alternatives. That unfortunate garage design reflects our car-dominated country and the car-dependency of many suburban communities.

Here on our little corner of Garfield, we’ve been unable to park in our garage for months and months due to a seemingly endless house project. The garage is slated to be cleaned out of construction stuff soon. I look forward to being able to park in there again — hopefully before the snow flies.
