Nancy Russell writes, of the plaque: >If we're going > to remember history, let's remember it correctly, eh? What do you think?
Precisely. It seems nonsensical to erect a generic plaque that doesn't acknowledge that River-Lake Tabernacle's historical relevance is inextricably mixed up in anti-Semitism. If the HPC wants to ignore a major historic factor, they don't seem worthy of their name to me. A few years ago, when I interviewed Nellie Stone Johnson for her oral history, she vividly remembered the Raders of River-Lake infamy crusading against her and spewing filth. It still made her emotional 50 years later - both the outrage at their invective and the satisfaction she felt at overcoming their hate to become the first black elected in Minneapolis. Let's remember the history of River-Lake properly as fully as possible. [Very side note: it did make me cringe thinking of the hard-working folks in Kingfield who have renamed the 40th Street Greenway the River-Lake Greenway. Perhaps it should be the Lake-River Greenway now?] David Brauer King Field _______________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A City-focused Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
