Mel's reply In the early 60's alley houses were considered so bad that the city required that they be torn down, if there was another house on the lot. Now they want to do an 180 and build them again. Maybe someone should ask why if they were bad before how can they be good now? Mpls needs to get back to basics, and begin providing public safety and taking care of the public infrastructure. Anything else just drives people to the burbs. Mel Gregerson Whittier You are exactly right. There are quite a few alley houses or garages that were made into housing in Mpls. Evidently at some time in this cities history they made a zoning ordinance that required you to have a livable structure on the lot. Some families couldn't afford to build a big house so they built the garage as a small livable unit and then when they could afford it, they built the big house and converted the alley house into a garage. Some alley houses never made it garagedom and still exist today as Alley houses. Generally, they are placed at the back of the lot near the alley or away from the street. That is really good in the end. Those alley houses are providing affordable housing for people in neighborhoods that otherwise have housing that is not affordable to many people. I know quite a few people living in those little alley houses. They are very cute. It seems like it's mostly the neighborhood East of Nokomis and those south of lake between Hiawatha and the river that have them. Are there other areas of town that have alley houses? Just curious.
