We live in a 113 year old house in South Minneapolis that we have shared over the past four years with at least a dozen bats, as many mice, plus pigeons and squirrels in the eaves, a big, fat raccoon that hangs around our trashcan at 4 in the morning, and a human male who made our garage his temporary home.
We have found that duck taping every crack bigger than an 1/8 inch seems to help keep the bats from swooping over our heads, and when they do occasionally still get in, a fine-mesh fishing net with a six foot handle works wonders at capturing the little furry things to return outdoors. The cat is a good mouser... but it sometimes takes him a little while to catch the entire new family that comes in from the cold each fall. Last week my daughter caught a mouse eating out of the cat food dish! A pest specialist put metal covers over the holes the squirrels and pigeons chewed in the eaves. And, new garage doors that closed and latched correctly keeps the human male from sleeping in our garage. I really hope he has found a decent place to live.
