Bald eagles live under the Lake Street Bridge and hunt at the falls by both Lock and Dams. In the summer you can find them quite frequently if you walk along where the Rowing Club is on the West Bank. To the point that we were worried about our small dogs and would not let them off leash.
There were a pair of barred owls migrating through last week. Barred owls have a distinctive HooHooHEHoo call in case you think you may see some. Over by the River Road we also get humming birds, sometimes for the whole summer if food is plentiful enough. Neighbors planting enough native vegetation seems to help quite a bit. We have also had nesting Cooper's Hawks which you can see quite well in the spring before the trees have leafed out. I have seen deer on the River Road and have even seen a poor deer lost in downtown one morning over by the Depot. The best deer story I heard was from someone up early doing traffic counts on Hennepin Avenue Bridge who observed a deer who apparently had a strong hankering to go from the West Bank to the East Bank without wetting its hooves. So yup, there it was strolling across the bridge like the bridge was made for it.
