I was glad to see Niel Richie's post about the LONG process for coming to some decisions about Lyndale Ave. For all those who worry (and then complain) about reducing the road to two lanes I would just point out that after one or two big winter snow falls Lyndale Ave. functions as a two-lane road most of the winter. Somehow we manage to survive. Designing Lyndale as a two-lane road with designated left-turn lanes will only improve things.

Tests done on west 50th Street this past summer showed clearly how well a two-lane road works. Traffic flowed. There were no big backups at controlled intersections and best of all, speeds were reduced. That is, all those people driving 45+ miles-per-hour had to fall in line with those driving the legal speed limit. The whole nature of the street changed for the better. Next summer these changes will be made permanent on 50th Street.

Kudos to all those who worked so hard on both these projects and came to such a sane and liveable solutions.

Based on fuzzy recollections:

The city has been working with the county for a number
of years now on how to deal with the need to rebuild
Lyndale Avenue, taking into account the way it relates
to the variety of commercial and residential areas it
moves through.
