Title: Deep in the Heart of Taxes
Don Portwood, the pastor at my Minneapolis church, gave a great sermon a couple of years back called “Deep in the Heart of Taxes”. Some of the things I remember about that memorable sermon: In some countries, tax day is a holiday because it is a celebration of the fact that people are using their money to support the whole community. Taxes always support some things we don’t agree with. But they also always support things we desperately need. We may disagree with some of the uses. But it is our sacred duty to contribute to the well-being of the whole.

I know it is good to examine where the money goes and how it is actually used. But I’m not moving to Canada so I hope you won’t move to Richfield. I am much more upset about our federal tax uses than local. Federal tax cuts (and rebates) inevitably shift the burden to the states. State tax cuts (and rebates) in turn shift the burden to cities and towns. The buck stops here. So to speak.
