Over here in Saint Paul, I hear that The Dakota Bar and Grill has a no-smoking policy for national acts.
There was mention of Santa Cruz, CA and an ordinance. I'm pretty sure that it's a state law banning smoking in both bars and restaurants. In my visits in the last few years, there's pretty much no reason to worry about whether someone will be smoking. There may be some bars that don't worry about the law, but the vast majority comply. That said, the current state of things here works pretty well for me. If I go into a restaurant that isn't smoke-free, I make sure that my table is well away from the smoking area, even if I have to wait a while. If it's too bad, I leave and never come back. Kind of like not going to a place that doesn't take reservations and has long waits. My time isn't wasted on such places.
