Dear List members; It was Victoria Heller's reminder on The List that moved me, with one day remaining to deadline, to petition for lower valuations of my commercial property earlier this year. My hat is off to her vigilance in this, and other, public service here on The List. Those who delete will not delight in her insights.

I was reasonably satisfied, but not ecstatic by the reductions in my commercial valuations. I saved MUCH in '02 payables, and will continue to save in '03.
WM: Five years ago I petitioned to lower my tax rate. It was a very good thing. I had paid very little, but my house had been Harriet Tubman Shelter so there was muchos work to do returning it from institution to house. (I'll be dead from chemicals, dust, and crud before all the work is done.)
The city lowered the taxes to fit the conditions of the building. This year my house is up to over $60,000 which does more or less reflect what we have accomplished so far. In fact, I'm feeling kinda slick for being able to mark progress in coin of the realm. Now, like every other good home owner, I can say that I have to pay an extra $10 a month for the rest of my life, for having fixed a bunch of stuff and tolerated the consequences of living at Lake and Oakland where I can look out my kitchen window at an ugly privacy fence around a whore house and the junkies, prostitutes, and pitiful players acting out their pain and rage on the streets. I cannot understand my own logic in this, but I'm actually grateful for the opportunity to apparently join the middle class at the very fuzzy end of the fringe.

Be careful what you wish, and petition for, you might get it.

WM: Before, when something broke I called the landlord. If he/she didn't come and fix it in a reasonable amount of time, I moved. Kissed that freedom good bye. Now, I can't just walk away, I'd be likely to walk away mad. I just hate when that happens.
