for the latest info on the Access Project.

...and if you dont have something more fun planned for tonight...like a
root canal...endure the Access Project's "open house" tonight...
Thursday, the 14th at Phelps Park-701 East 39th Street 7-9 pm ... for a
two-minute chance to say something about it.

WM: I went to the 35W open house and though I would have organized it a little differently, I was game. There is a huge amount of information to take in if you are new to the information (I wasn't, but other people certainly were). Great big drawings on the walls, models, smaller architectural views. There's also about an inch of print materials.
I urge everyone between 18th St. and 46th St. and between maybe Grand and Fourth Av. to have a thoughtful look at the information they give you and their explanation of what they have done so far. Depending on the number of people with questions, one could have as much as two minutes to ask question(s).
Rather than waste time in polemics pro or con, I asked one of my questions. I'm going back tonight to ask another question.
This project is huge in the amount of real estate it covers. It will change things in our every day lives. I have serious doubts about anyone's ability to stop this project from happening since Wellstone supported it and had already set in motion the machinery to put money into it.
It is an access project for each of us since our access to everything around the freeway will change. As near as I can yet tell, the roadway and accoutrements stay within the present boundaries from 46th to 38th where an "elipse about" will be constructed above the roadway, speed of 38th St. will be 30mph. No land taken. The on ramp at 35th and the off at 36th will disappear and those streets will become two-way and drop their speed to 30mph.
The Lake St. bridge will be rebuilt and widened underneath. The 31st. St. bridge will be rebuilt.
On top the Lake St. bridge will be a transit station with elevators from Lake St. There's a complex HOV system planned to accommodate a bus station on the Lake St. bridge--not to be built till 2015. There will be a fly-over to 28th St. beginning at the North side of the Lake St. bridge and feeding down to 28th St. There will be a ramp onto 35 Northbound slipping under the fly-over.
There's a whole lot more. It would take yards more print.
Do yourself a favor, look at this thing. Tonight, 7 p.m., Phelps Park, 39th and Chicago. It's pretty amazing.
