I do not want to be accused of beating a dead Snowman, but something in the
morning paper brought up the issue again. There was a report that the City
Council decided not to participate in the Snowman statue (remember that this
is a stateside effort) program because it was "not art." Then a couple of
pages later there is the Guthrie Theater story and how Minneapolis will be
going to the legislature to hopefully get $35 million for this "art."

Folks, if I put on my hat as a former resident of southwest Minnesota, I can
just hear the neighbors saying "There goes those hoity toity folks in the
City saying they don't like our art, but we are supposed to fund theirs."

We want others to help with our problems, and believe me I understand the
concept of municipal overburden - the City taking more than its fair share of
non-profits that pay no property taxes, half way houses, etc., etc., But we
shouldn't go out of our way to antagonize the very people we want to help.
