I read Sheldon's post slightly differently. (http://www.mnforum.org/pipermail/mpls/2002-November/018529.html) He was responding to David Piehl's assertation that Pawlenty's language to the effect that we needed to do this to support Allina and Wells Fargo runs counter to Parker and McLaughlin's message that it is good for the neighborhood. While the project in its current form sounds like it does negatively impact the neighborhood while positively impacting the businesses, the two are not mutually independent. One could imagine a solution that positively impacted the neighborhood and positively affected the businesses. Pawlenty might support it for the latter reason while McLaughlin might support it for the former. I saw Sheldon's statement expressing concern that by automatically assuming that the goals have to be in conflict, it becomes much harder to look for an ideal cooperative solution. Speaking of which, it sounds like the major concerns with the current design is that it: * uses flyover ramps * creates an unfriendly pedestrian/cyclist environment * involves expansion and * involves destruction of local housing and businesses. Btw, is the expansion the HOV lanes? Is the objection an objection to HOV lanes, an objection to the freeway becoming wider, both, or something else? How many of the project's current opponents would support a solution that involved lower impact direct ramps supporting traffic from the north, was redesigned to be more ped/cyclist friendly, and had factors to reduce the current freeway impact on the neighborhood? Can such a solution be found? - Jason Goray, Sheridan, NE __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
