Jason Goray raises interesting points. No,
there's no law of economics that says corporate
and neighborhood interests have to conflict. It
is the WAY business is managed (profit being the
trump value) that causes the conflict. I'm sure
you can find corporations that realize stepping
on people is not a good way to preserve goodwill.
Those companies tend to prosper in a more
reliable way than the villainish ones. The
latter are really mostly interested in pleasing
financial analysts so they will rate their stock
a "buy". Socially-responsible analysts look past
revenues and profits to style of management. The
corporations they pick are likely to work for
common interests with neighborhoods and not try
to pull the wool over their eyes.

Revitalization: Bob Velez, you probably missed
my earlier message where I pointed out the large
amount of neighborhood development we've had in
Longfellow IRRESPECTIVE of highway projects. It
was hardly the bridge over lake that caused the
YWCA to be built. I think its a sham to claim
that somehow this highway project is for that
reason. As I've said, they've wanted to build a
bigger pipe for at least ten years. They are
using Lake Street redevelopment as a Trojan Horse
to sell the project that has been beaten down
before. WizardMarks may not admit it, but those
of us with less invested can certainly do so.

Doug: The essence of reading is not sounding
words, it is INTERPRETING SYMBOLS. If a symbol
on a page does not stimulate a meaning in the
brain, you do not have reading.
---------------------------------------------
Jason: Hear hear. I'm for repealing every law
they don't enforce. I hate looking at bulging
law books, full of laws there is neither will nor
resources to enforce. The result of these laws
is that most of society is made up of
lawbreakers.
Yet, the jails are full of people who only break
laws we CARE about. So, we are in the process of
differentiating between offenders. And what that
teaches crooks is to be clever enough to be an
offender who never pays a price. Many of them
fail, but that's the inevitable lack of judgment
that bedevils human beings. We are CREATING
crime with this approach to law.
