4th Ward Council Representation In response to the dialogue facilitated by Jim Graham from Ventura Village and Linda Mann from KingField... My criteria for a good CM is one who will represent the powerless and not just the suits (or uniforms, as the case may be). My picks are Natalie and Dean foremost (GP) but also Gary Schiff. I have lived in the 4th Ward the past 13 years and from the inside looking out not the outside looking in, maybe I'm biased in thinking our council representative has been effective in serving the needs and interests of residents and constituencies here. I align with Jim Graham in this case. I've found that Council Member Barbara Johnson is very attentive to citizen concerns, livability issues, and works at keeping open the lines of communications with neighborhood organizations. CM Johnson is fiscally moderate and socially progressive that matches up reasonably well with many persons in our increasingly diverse Ward 4. CM Johnson remembers the needs of the working people in the 4th Ward and does not represent the so-called "suits" downtown. And yes, I've been a ward appointee on CLIC for several years, but have worked with other council and mayoral appointees from across the city to take a citywide as well as ward perspective. CM Johnson had built her own reputation and contributed through community involvement/public service in this area so that when her mother Alice Rainville retired from the council, voters in the 4th Ward were willing to vote to give Barbara an opportunity even amidst a large group of well qualified candidates. I've read the comments about the families in the 3rd Ward race. Give everyone equal opportunity, but why on earth should a person be discriminated against because of a family's tradition of public service? Jeffrey L.
