The Twin Cities beat out such regions as San Francisco, Austin, Texas and Stockholm,
Sweden to be ranked as the world's
most knowledge competitive region.

The honor was bestowed on Minneapolis-St. Paul by Robert Huggins Associates, a
research company in the United Kingdom that
studies international and regional competitiveness.

Huggins said its "World Knowledge Competitiveness index 2002" is based upon a series
of indicators, including the number of
managers per 1,000 inhabitants; the number of IT, computer manufacturing,
biotechnology and automotive engineering
employees per 1,000 inhabitants; the number of patents registered per million people;
mean gross monthly earnings;
unemployment rates and per capita public spending on education.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul region scored 147.6 on the index, followed by San Francisco
and Silicon Valley, Calif. at 146.4
and Austin, Texas at 145.1.

The U.S. accounted for 49 of the top 90 of the world's most competitive regions.
Stockholm is the highest ranked non-U.S.
region, in 22nd place..
