We could use some more ticketing of red light and stop sign runners, drunk and drugged drivers too.

My little department at the Minneapolis Post Office has a little over a hundred professional drivers. Our department operates the big trucks that move mail from station to station in the Minneapolis area. One of our drivers was hit by a red light runner a couple weeks ago. He was unconscious for a couple hours and sustained so serious a back injury that he can barely walk.

Another driver was hauling mail on I 94 when his trailer was broadsided by a carload of drunks. Two of the drunks died at the scene and the 3rd died a few days later. He had only minor injuries, but will probably suffer from a lifetime of PTSD. He now does clerical work in the dispatch office- they don't think he's ready to get back into a truck yet.

A 3rd driver just had the first of his knees operated on. The were practically destroyed by a drunk that hit his Postal Service truck back in the 1970s. They've since become arthritic and he is barely able to walk in considerable pain and hasn't been able to drive truck for a couple years.

Three drivers out of a mere hundred seriously injured on Minneapolis and St.Paul's streets. We have a problem here that cries out for enforcement action. Meanwhile, MPD's traffic squads waste their time writing speeding tickets on the Hennipen Avenue Bridge. Easy revenue for MPD, but doesn't do much for traffic safety... MPD, could we have some real enforcement, please?

peace.

Big news this morning: MPD's traffic unit actually issues a
citation! I am not making this up.

While stop signs and signals remain effectively unenforced,
it is apparently not acceptable to run a stop sign and run
broadside into a school bus in the midst of the intersection
when said bus is carrying at least seven elementary school
students and tips all the way over. Five or six students,
maybe that's okay, but at least we know that seven will get
you a real ticket (today anyway).
