Hello Minneapolis Folks:
I strongly disagree with Mayor Rybak position to veto any city resolution that would oppose the war with Iraqi. The Mayor states, We were not elected to run the country's foreign policy. We were elected to run the city of Minneapolis, where we have huge issues on our plate. I agree the city has serious budgetary issues, environmental issues, and issues related to government ethics and accountability. However, our countries foreign policy will become an issue that will impact how the future of our city.
If the United States goes to war with Iraq the federal and state governmentwill have fewer dollars to allocate towards our city. We will see our children and grandchildren sent off to fight in a war and possible not return. Some of our young people will return with disabilities and serious physical and emotional scars. The energy market will become destabilized because of war and petroleum price will increase. The city will need to increase spending for transportation for our city fleet and individuals will have fewer dollars to spend on their families. The cities plate will be very full and leave a bad taste in our mouths.

I am opposed to action in Iraq.
However I did want to make it clear that if a resolution opposing the war did pass the city council, I would veto it.
We were not elected to run the country's foreign policy. We were elected to run the city of Minneapolis, where we have huge issues on our plate. We need to keep focused on them.
I will continue to make my feelings clear as I have in the past by marching in the protest at the Capitol, joining a protest at the Federal Building and communicating my opposition to the war to my federal elected officials.
