Last weekend I noted a drop in activity at 310. One of the perps even came over and all but accused me of calling Animal Control on them. Yesterday a neighbor told me they'd been busted (again). Thank you MPD for shutting down this little illegal drug/dogfighting/and who knows what else criminal enterprise! Funny how it seems that every tenant of the current landlord (Bob Zeman) ends up getting busted. Where does Mr. Zeman do his recruiting, and why does he still have a rental licence?

More on the continuing wonders of natural gas. Yesterday I noted some fire department activity on the next block. Wandering outside I noted the strong smell of Minnegasco's product. Being directly downwind from the new house being installed on said next block I immediately understood the problem. I promptly dropped the power, the 2 gas appliances were already at pilot light setting. I would have shut them off, but the shutoffs for these appliances are rusted open, so the only way I have to shutoff the gas is by the main valve that shuts off the whole house. Just another little complication that Minnegasco's drug dealer market strategy produces...

I headed north to get out of the gas, then doubled back a block over to see what was happening from the upwind side. Although no one seemed to know what was going on, I quickly deduced that the contractor had located the gas pipe by breaking it- this seems to be becoming an increasingly common practice. So at least 4 of our fire trucks and crews were tied up for an hour or so by this contractor's incompetence. Note to city budget wonks- do we have any way of billing these contractors for this?

This morning I managed to clear my chimney and put my space heater back in operation without Minnegasco's expensive intervention. Using high pressure water and a plumber's snake I worked away at the blockage. I was eventually rewarded by cool air and sunlight glinting down the shaft.

BTW, 312 25th Avenue North, the former drug/prostitution house is for sale. There was enough dope done in that house to give the next owners a contact high for years to come. Otherwise I find little to recommend it.

all quiet in Hawthorne (for now),
