List,

What would be the reasons -- from an issue perspective, not a strategy
or political perspective -- where it makes sense to limit a third ward
council campaign to an endorsement process?

It seems to me that the party delegates were picked by their neighbors
for a different race, focusing on different issues. They were picked
two years ago. In the end there will be at most 70 or so people
endorsing a candidate. I will be extraordinarily surprised if (prior to
an obligatory final "unanimous ballot") more then 40 people picked the
"DFL endorsed" candidate on Monday.

How does this process promote the values of enfranchisement? How does
this process encourage involvement? How does this process stop the
growing disenchantment with the DFL? How does it ensure that issues are
heard and the people of the Third Ward have the greatest opportunity to
choose an advocate or a voice for their ward?

It seems to me in an extremely abbreviated election timeline -- which
unfortunately overlaps holidays and vacations -- it is in the best
interest of the community, and the political parties, to not consider
endorsements until after the primary. Providing less then a month for
people to seriously consider running, exploring options, putting
together a campaign team, and getting all of the infrastructure to run a
campaign ensure that the only viable endorsement campaigns will be from
people who are members of the "political class", people who have been
planning and strategizing to run for years -- or maybe a lifetime.

I am excited that there are lots of new names in the ring for the Third
Ward seat: Community leaders and community voices that represent the new
perspectives and new voices for which voters yearn. I think it would be
a tragedy for the residents of the third ward, the city of Minneapolis
-- and especially the DFL -- if the weight of the dominant political
party in town was prematurely thrown behind a candidate this Monday.

Allow each of the candidates to reach-out and talk to the voters of the
ward. Anyone who is able to mobilize a pluralities of voters for a
Monday election the day before New Year's Eve should be considered a far
stronger choice for making safe, affordable and livable communities.

Has anyone other than Moore announced they would abide by their party
endorsement?

I am amazed at the blatant political opportunism that is currently being

displayed in the 3rd Ward council race.

As of yesterday at 5:00 PM 11 folks that have filed to run for the 3rd
Ward
city council seat. 5 of them have not listed their address. Of them
Margo
Ashmore, Dave Ramstad and Keri Dziedzic (who has not yet filed but has
already pulled an ad in the Northeaster saying she is running) all live
outside the boundaries of the 3rd ward. That means that they will need
to
move into the ward if any of them do make it through the Dec 30th
primary.

I am glad to see that the availability of housing has finally become an
issue
to NE politicians.
