With all due respect to Tim Bonham, my past partner in low crimes and misdemeanors of a political nature (just kidding), I must make some corrections:

Some information about 3rd Ward:

At the Stonewall DFL Screening on Friday,
I'm a member of the Stonewall DFL board, one of 2 board members that live in the 3rd ward. Why was I given no notice of this screening? Why was no notice given on the Stonewall DFL's board and general membership mailing list? Were all the DFL candidates given notice of this screening?

both Olin Moore & Kari Dziedzic stated that they would not run against an endorsed DFL candidate.
Kari Dziedzic's been hedging on this one...

Margo Ashmore stated that she would, and that she was not sure that she would even seek DFL endorsement -- she was undecided, but might run as an Independent.
Margo Ashmore doesn't even live in the 3rd. And why would anyone up and move for not even a full term in a sixty some thousand a year job? The numbers don't add up...

I don't understand the apparent indignation of some people about the fact that several of the candidates live in the new (redistricted) 3rd ward but not in the old 3rd ward. It isn't like these are carpetbaggers moving in just for the election -- they have lived & worked & volunteered in this ward for many years, and are well known to people in the ward.
I live here and a number of candidates seem to have crawled out of the woodwork. If they were 3rd Ward DFLer's I'd have likely met them before.

The DFL delegates (and DFL primary voters) will soon let them know if they haven't done enough for the ward! For some of them, the ward line is literally just across the street.
Agreed. Sadly, this DFL endorsement process is so flawed that the primary voters will be forced to do the DFL's work by default.

The only legal requirement is that they reside in the (old) ward as of Saturday, Jan 5th, 2003. After all, Robert Lilligren & Dean Zimmerman were not required to relocate when their ward moved out from under them in the redistricting. And at least one candidate, Kari Dziedzic, has already moved to an address that is in both the old & new ward lines.
Again, why would one move for this job- it's simply not worth it for a council members salary. A council member can figure on putting in 60+ hours a week, and a union truck driver or construction worker would make a better living with that much overtime. And they wouldn't have to move.

I also don't agree with the comments denigrating the DFL endorsement convention. I really expect that there will be as many delegates at this convention as at the last one,
Lets see, how many delegates did we have at the last 3rd Ward endorsing convention? 40 something if I remember correctly.

even though that one was much closer to their election as delegates. And if delegates have moved out of the ward, no doubt other delegates have moved in, and can be seated at this convention. And in the end, as the saying goes, "the work is done by those who show up".
So does the DFL propose that I quit my job to attend their endorsing convention?

BTW, the Stonewall DFL isn't the only interest group doing questionable endorsements in this race. I just received a letter from the Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council conferring their endorsement on Kari Dziedzic.

Labor has historically been one of the strongest supporters of the endorsement system, so one can only wonder why they would endorse Kari Dziedzic when she may not abide by the endorsement. Labor has also championed candidates who will promote economic development that provides living wage jobs. In her literature Kari Dziedzic makes no mention of living wage jobs, but does talk about "opportunities for economic development- and jobs- on Broadway Avenue, Central Avenue, Fremont Avenue, and Lowry Avenue.". Fremont Avenue?! Last I was down it (yesterday) it was pretty much a residential street. Does Kari Dziedzic have a major commercial development planned for Fremont Avenue, or is she that unfamiliar with the Northside?

The letter closes with a request that union member delegates come early for a labor caucus at 6 pm. Guys, I'd love to make it, but I'm probably gonna be stuck at... work. If Labor really wants to turn out it's delegates to these conventions they need to get their stewards and business agents filing grievances so we can get off work to attend. In my precinct alone I and another labor delegate will probably be unable to attend.

Then again, if I were supporting their endorsee, Kari Dziedzic, perhaps they'd make sure I could get off work to attend the endorsing convention?

Botched endorsements. Questionable endorsements. Bring on the primary!
