Well, this is a bit different than budgets, crime and politics, but I have discovered a map on the Internet entitled "Great Lakes Region 1688-1753" which details the French settlements of North America.
The map, a reconstruction done in English, shows Fort St. Antoine (St. Anthony), east of the Mississippi. It also shows on the west bank, Fort Beauhamois. Beauhamois was a colonial governor of New France, as it was called in those days. There is also a reference further up the Mississippi on the west side to St. Michael the Archangel. Does anybody know anything about these early French settlements, which surely must have been quite small and temporary? Here is the URL: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/reference/maps/freeimages.asp?ImageID =406 I can't seem to enlarge it, but if somebody wants a file, I would be happy to send them it. The map I have covers from Montreal to Minnesota, south to Richmond and southern Illinois.
