I want to go back to a thread I threw out a few days ago, and no one picked up.
The mayor and chief have touted a re-deployment of Minneapolis officers to the Minnesota Gang Strike Force - in fact, it is central to their response to the recent gang killings. However, Minneapolis deployments to the force have been cut significantly in recent years - down to two officers, if I remember press accounts correctly. So: Why were deployments cut in the first place - especially if the gang strike force is now such an effective tool? Did city and police leaders err in cutting back? Did they underestimate the persistence of the gang problem? Or were there sound budget/effectiveness reasons to cut back...and why don't those apply now? Any other knowledgeable comments on the worth, or lack thereof, of the Gang Strike Force would be helpful to this citizen right now.
