Annual Christmas celebrations in my family included a joyful trip downtown (from 47th & Stevens) to gawk at the window displays in Dayton's flagship store and shop, shop, shop.
Then we would go over to Holtzermann's on the West Bank (an original version of Pier I imports) to shop some more. Then we would go to my dad's office on 10th Street (where Ruth's Chris' Steak House now sits) for Christmas cookies and cocoa. Yep - Minneapolis was a wonderful city - until the planners and spenders took over. I'll choose free enterprise any day, anywhere.
