This issue fascinates me. There appear to be two groups of people who have chimed in on it. One group lives on or near Hiawatha and consider at least part of its purpose to be a local street. Since they, their neighbors, their children, and others have to cross this street in their neighborhood they're opposed to raising the speed limit. I posted on behalf of my computerless friend Kari Tauring some time ago. She counted 18 high school students crossing Hiawatha at 38th St. when she was there for a short time. This was a month or two ago, but I'm sure this happens on a daily basis.

The other group of people drive down Hiawatha to get somewhere else. They seem to view the road as a freeway. (Highway doesn't seem to quite sum up their perspective).

The bottom line, to me, is that the neighborhoods near Hiawatha were told they speed limit would never exceed 35 MPH. Sorry if you're in a hurry to get somewhere else, but that promise needs to be kept. The needs of the people who live along any street should always be the priority.
