I have posted on this before but I though I would add my two cents, again.
I have a child who crosses Hiawatha twice a day, on foot, to attend South
High. I cross Hiawatha several times a day (in a vehicle), at differing
times. I suspect that many of the people posting in favor of increasing the
speed limit, only drive it occasionally or at rush hour, and are not aware
of the reality of the other 20 hours each day.

People running red lights is a HUGE and constant problem. Many people
cannot stop in time, mainly because they are going TOO FAST! As I sit in
the left turn lane, waiting for the arrow, it is usual for anywhere from one
to six cars run the light. The intersection at 26th is one of the worst
because of its proximity to the freeway. (The Highway Patrol used to watch
that intersection and ticket red light runners but they haven't been around
for quite a while.)

I have seen so many near misses with pedestrians and cyclists (some of whom
are children) it takes my breath away. I will go on the record here and now
and say that it won't be too much longer before there will be a fatality.
It is already wild out there with drivers showing an incredible disregard
for anyone but themselves.

I can't imagine how someone with disabilities could cross Hiawatha right
now. Increasing the speed limit would simply mean that more people would be
running every light. If you increase the length of every light crossing
Hiawatha you would, in effect, slow the flow of traffic more than
maintaining the 35 mph limit.
