The truth of the matter (regarding speed limits) is that people now travel 50mph in a 35mph zone. To increase the speed limit further would, in my opnion, be absurd.
My reply: Dennis and several others seem to be of the opinion that we need to keep the Hiawatha speed limit at 35mph to keep the defacto speed at 45-50. I think it is very poor policy to purposely set a speed limit 10-15mph less than what it should be, on the presumption that drivers will exceed the limit by that amount: 1) This way you encourage drivers to exceed the posted limit 2) What are the police supposed to do? Only pull over people who exceed the limit by 25mph? Will this rule be published? 3) Most drivers don't purposely drive at a speed 10-15 mph over the limit - they drive at the speed they consider to be reasonable. If the posted speed was 55, I think only a few nuts would go faster. It's true that the 10-15 mph rule does occur to some extent on the interstates - but that's because those highways are regularly patrolled, and drivers knew they'd be pulled over if they went say 25 mph over the limit. That's not the case for Hiawatha. Leaving the limit at a speed that every knows is ridiculous and regularly ignores is what is absurd.
