Attempting to defend Don Samuels' anti worker agenda, Megan writes:
Agreed, we have few enough living wage jobs in the 3rd and I suspect Don Samuels would chase away what we do have with his anti labor attitudes. What seperates Samuels from Moore, and demonstrates Samuels superior ability to make a positive change for Ward 3, when it comes to fighting against the drug dealers and gangs that inhabit our neighborhoods, is that while Don is 'fighting' the dealers to cease and decist their criminal activity, he is hands-on actively 'fighting' to change the dysfunctional environments that leave these young men & young women facing nothing but closed doors on a path leading down the wrong road to failure. Many, many, many aspects of society are the cause of the lack of options that bring these adolescents into this lifestyle.
Don recognizes that and has choosen to give of his flesh, blood and alot of sweat to fight for these young people. He picked this choice out of a barrel of other choices he and his family had at hand, he picked it years before an oppurtunity to represent his people (black, white, yellow, brown, gray, purple, ALL people) was even presented, he will continue BOTH fights regardless of what happens at the polls tomorrow.
He's welcome to.
Dyna, I ask you this:
>When was the last time Olin Moore hosted an
afternoon of tutoring to at-risk youth in his living
room?
Ask yourself this: Why would any intelligent youth bother
studying when the only jobs left in Don Samuel's neighborhood are
part time and pay minimum wage? The economic realities are pretty
simple- living wage (union) jobs stabilize a neighborhood. The kids
realize that if they stay in school and out of jail they will get a
decent union job at the dairy, bakery, UPS, or in government service.
When someone like Don Samuels with his anti union attitudes chases
those union jobs out the gangs move in. We lost Schwiegert's and its
hundreds of living wage jobs and it's no surprise that the gangs
moved in to replace them. The same process happened in Detroit (auto
plants) and the south side of Chicago (steel and the Pullman works)-
the union jobs disappear and the gangs move in to employ the
unemployed youth.Armed Minneapolis Police generally call for backup in this kind of situation, and I think Olin Moore is smart enough to call the police in this kind of situation too. I suspect this story is evidence of either Don Samuels' inner city nievity born of his short tenure here or the growing legend (as opposed to facts) of Don Samuels.>When was the last time Olin Moore approached a gang-member on the street corner and informed him that he was not welcome and would have to leave?
Maybe because Olin Moore is working for the whole ward and not just Jordan?>When was the last time Olin Moore even attended his own neighborhood board meeting, never mind developed successful forums that would bring sworms of neighbors together to rally for the positive changes that have been taking place in Jordan? ( Correct me if I am wrong but I recall a neighbor of Moore's who made a post on this list saying he didn't even know Moore lived in his neighborhood unitl this special election started getting publicity, WHAT IN THE WORLD?!?!?!?!?!
My attitude is realistic. The housing shortage and some shady lending practices artificially inflated property values on the Northside. Looking at the housing stock, when new homes in the suburbs are going for less than $200,000 it would be insane to spend more than $100,000 on the Northside's typical hundred year old house. In the short run the prospects for inner city neighborhoods are not good- rising unemployment will drive more young folks to gangs as the employer of last resort. Crime will take off again, and as residents flee to safer environments many inner city neighborhoods will be deserted but for the gangs. You say you wish things were going 'that well' in Hawthorne. You suggest that property owners of these 'empty houses' dump their property now before it really tanks. It makes me incredibly sad to see such a negative attitude.
I would only take a home in Jordan or Hawthorne where I live as a gift- which mine was. Like many boomers I can retire in a few years and can purchase a decent home in a low crime neighborhood in greater Minnesota for far less than I can buy a run down dump surrounded by crack houses in the Northside. As for the momentum, you need to look around- even the cities traditional hardy denizens, gay folks and minorities, are moving out to the suburbs and small towns. The math is simple- America's largest employer is now Wal Mart and they pay minimum wage or barely above that everywhere. So if you're stuck working at WalMart wages, you may as well move to a small town where you can afford housing on such low wages. This explains why I'm increasingly seeing minority folks working and living in Sacred Heart, Echo, and Breckinridge.I personally invite you to Jordan, as a visitor or perhaps as a future resident. We will welcome you as everyone has welcomed me, a young, single, white, professional, first-time homebuyer who 7 months ago stumbled into the best kept secret of Minneapolis. The momentum here is truely amazing and we have many dedicated people to thank for that, but may I speak for all Jordan residents when I say we have The Samuels Family to thank for the wind behind the momentum.
I am union, and Don Samuels is anti union. Why should I vote for Don Samuels, who wants to destroy everything my family of Northsiders has worked for over the last century?Or perhaps you want to stay in Hawthorne, here's an idea for you: You can stay in the home that I'm sure you love, avoid the hassle and expense of moving to Jordan, enjoy, relish and bask in seeing dramatic changes in your neighborhood. Sound too good to be true? Here's how it can be done: You can make a vote tomorrow that will bring this Hurricane of Positivity and Change a few blocks over and throughout the rest of Ward 3 and the City Council. Vote for Don Samuels. Just think about it! No one will ever know that you broke the mold unless you want them to! Ballots are anonymous!
Being a union person I doubt I'd be welcome among the yuppies at Don Samuels' party. Sorry, but my pickup truck is paid for and I have no cell phone number to call. I am also a Democrat, and don't impose myself into the Republican's activities, and I'll give Don Samuels the same respect. As a matter of fact, if you'd like to be a part of such an inspiring movement, I personally invite you to Don's victory party tomorrow night, you can be my guest, I will introduce you to all the wonderful people I have been honored to meet and we will all welcome you into this new family of fighters for positive change. If you're interested in my invitation, simply email me and we can make further arrangements. It may be the most rewarding thing you ever do for yourself. And hey, if your not satisfied, you can always return to the negative, un-fulfilling side of politics which prompted this discussion in the first place.
standing up for Olin Moore in Hawthorne,
Dyna Sluyter
