This happened to me several times in the past few years. about 3 years
ago, infront of Williams Uptown, I decided to check call the the guy's
bluff. He had his "wife" across the street, car was impounded, kids
stuck in southern MN, no money for bus etc. He even showed me an auto
registration.

I told him I'd help him if I can verify his information. I called the
police and the impound lot. Oddly enough there was a car that was
impounded just like he said. Unfortunately for him though, it didn't
belong to him.

I asked if he was listed in the phone book in the city he claimed he
live. He said yes. I called information and they didn't have him
listed.

It took about 30 minutes to get all that done. Back and forth between
the impound lot and the police took the longest. In the end he didn't
get a dime from me. I think we all should keep in mind that there are
people out there who could possibly be in distress. Instead of turning
them away, maybe make an effort to check their story out (while they
wait outside). If anything they are really in distress, maybe an offer
to call the police for them might help them out (or help you find out
if they are legit).

If you don't want to do all that, simply ask them for money before they
ask you for yours. :)
